LabelSense's Swaminarayan mode is vegetarian without the onion–garlic family, and it also flags asafoetida (hing). Anything marked Red (animal-derived) or Yellow (egg) is not suitable.
Asafoetida is often printed as “asafoetida”, “asafetida”, “hing”, “heeng” — and as “compounded asafoetida” in Indian spice blends, snack mixes and pickles.
Potatoes and other root vegetables are not flagged in Swaminarayan mode — those belong to the Jain guide.
Additives whose source a label rarely states — such as emulsifier 471 — show as “Check the source”. See the E-number guide.
Results come from reading the label. Always check the pack yourself, especially for allergies. Ingredient sources can change without notice — when a label doesn't settle it, ask the manufacturer.
